Artificial intelligence specialists say they’re seeing signs of the AI industry taking off.
“It’s really exciting,” said Robyn King, vice-president of research at Google Canada.
“There’s a lot of people who are interested in this area and it’s really going to explode.”
AI researchers say there are more than 10,000 artificial intelligence researchers in Canada.
They say they have thousands of projects in development and that the industry is set to explode in the next decade.
“The market is growing at a rate of 5 per cent a year, so we’re not even 10 years away from being in the 20-per-cent-a-year range,” said King.
Google has been looking for ways to boost the industry, particularly with the technology being used in autonomous cars and robots. “
They are the future.”
Google has been looking for ways to boost the industry, particularly with the technology being used in autonomous cars and robots.
“As we get closer to AI, we’re going to be seeing companies emerge who are trying to create products that can compete with the industry at the same time,” said Andrew Ng, vice president of engineering at Google.
“We’re very excited about that and we’re working on getting more companies involved.”
AI experts say we should expect to see a lot less of the old ways of thinking about AI.
“This is really just the beginning of a big transformation,” said Stephen Li, the head of artificial intelligence research at Imperial College London.
“When it comes to the way we think about artificial intelligence, we’ll see the emergence of a whole new class of AI companies.”
In fact, many experts say that’s exactly what’s going to happen.
“In the next 10 years, there will be a lot fewer things like cars, robots and so forth,” said Ng.
“People are going to want to do their own work, to be creative, to create things and to do that in a way that is easy for people.”
In Canada, Google is already using some of the technology to create autonomous driving software.
It’s called Drive and it has been developed in collaboration with Google, Volvo, Honda and Toyota.
“You can create a car using the same algorithms that we’re using in our cars,” said Google.
